On Monday, the 21st of December 2026 Chess Festival Groningen proudly presents the RUG & Hanze Chess Tournament. A chess tournament for students and/or employees of both the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and/or the Hanzehogeschool Groningen.
At stake is the honour: who is the strongest chessplayer at the RUG, or Hanze? Who has the sharpest mind among the employees? What faculty, institute or academy can boast for their chess prowess?
On a more serious note: we offer anyone associated to our wonderfull educational centres the chance to experience a great day of chess. We are not planning any beginners courses before the start, but anyone capable of ‘distinguishing a knight from a bishop’ is welcome to play and have some fun.
This was actually for our Dutch compatriots, but it applies to all: it is free to enter the tournament! The tournament start at 13:00, we expect you to be present at around 12:30 and certainly no later than 12:45 to register in person.
The time control is 15 minutes for the game. The plan is to play 7 rounds, after which we will hold the pricegiving ceremony.
You can sign up for the tournament via our form below. We ask for your name, are you a student or employee, at the RUG or Hanze, and you can let us know if you want to join your faculty, institute or academy for the competition.
